Wedding First Dance Idea - Sleepwalk by Larry Carlton

SLEEPWALK/Larry Carlton

Being a DJ, I hear the same songs repeated at weddings.  The first dance went from Everything I Do (I Do It For You) by Bryan Adams in the early 90s to Amazed by Lonestar toward the end.  Sometimes you want to choose a different song, one that has not been overused.

I present to you Sleepwalk, a timeless classic from the 50s originally done by Santo & Johnny (and most well known from its use on the film La Bamba).  Well in the 80s, a remake was done by musician Larry Carlton.  This version has a dreamy, smooth jazz feel to it.  It conjures up images of a late night in a high-rise hotel in the city, dancing with someone or enjoying a sip of brandy.  Glmorous and classy, smooth jazz covers are winners.
This song is also appropriate for a father/daughter or mother/son dance.  Take a listen and tell me what you think.

Keep Them Dancing At The Wedding

Have you ever been to a wedding where the DJ was, let's say, subpar?

Maybe it was his sound system - some DJs don't know how to adjust their levels properly or play the music too loud. Maybe it was his lighting - there weren't enough lights or there were too many cheesy flashing lights. Or, maybe it was just the DJ himself - he's dressed in jeans, wearing a baseball cap or trying to look more stylish than formal. These are all problems with ignorant DJs, but the biggest problem is the DJ who doesn't know how to play the music.

Let's face it: we all have access to all the music anyone would need for a wedding. Everything from Black Eyed Peas to Michael Jackson, LMFAO to Lynyrd Skynyrd, every Unforgettable song - they're all there. The art comes in knowing what to play when.

The goal of a DJ at a wedding is to keep the crowd dancing. If a DJ can't do this, you're better off just playing (*gulp*) your iPod. While we know every wedding is different, let's talk about the trends VIP Entertainment has seen in today's weddings.

Disco Rules
No matter what a bride and groom ask for in our pre-wedding meeting, the majority of weddings degenerate into disco parties. 70s disco music mixed with a few hits from today seems to be the best combination for the majority of today's weddings. Of course a Country or Latin wedding could be exceptions, but even those crowds tend to respond well to "old-school" music. Picture the following set of music and the people dancing to it:
Get Down Tonight - Sexyback - We Are Family - Dynamite. If your crowd has any inclination to dance, this mix will keep them on the dance floor - guaranteed!

Wedding Sample Mix

No Play List
Most wedding couples get annoyed when you play a song they definitely don't like. It's one of those things where if you play everything right, they just remember the party - not the music specifically. But if you play the Macarena when they didn't want it, be ready for some grpes. During the pre-wedding meeting, we go over whether you really want to hear Y.M.C.A. or not and whether or not you want us to play these songs if someone happens to request them.

The Occasional Slow Song
If you're DJing right, you need to play some romantic songs. Of course you already should - this is an event full of couples, many wanting to feel the same magic they see in the couple getting married. On the other hand, if you're playing good dance music, you need slow songs because your crowd will get tired! When we DJ, the crowd stays on the dance floor so long, they need a break. The moment we see a few people going to the bar for a drink or to the seats for a break, we throw in a slow jam to bring them right back out on the dance floor. It's all about keeping them on the dance floor.

We Don't Play Every Request
That's right. Let's remind you - you hired us because we're the experts. We know what is going to make your crowd dance, and we know what's going to clear the dance floor. When that random guest comes and asks us to play Boot Scootin Boogie, we'll decide if it's a song your crowd wil dance to. We wouldn't want one song request played at the wrong time to make people reach for their jackets and leave the party early.
